Things to do:

Surrounded by the vast wilderness of the Wollemi National Park, nature is at our doorstep. Wildlife is abundant and wombats and wallabies are especially frequent visitors.
Birdwatchers will also find much of interest in the range and variety of species which make the Wolgan valley their home.
Bushwalkers can choose from a number of different walks, the 1 hour climb to the top of Mystery Mountain with its spectacular views over the ridges and canyons of the Park or the challenging 7 day hike out of the Park along the Wolgan River to Putty Road.
There are also rainforested canyons and gullies or rugged mountain tops to be explored.
For the more adventurous, mountain climbing, abseiling and canyoning are there to be enjoyed.
For those interested in history, the walk through the the ruins of the former shale oil refinery is a must.
And if nothing else can enthuse the visitor, the Wolgan River brings peace and relaxation to anyone who wanders along its banks.

Local Attractions:

Surrounded by the wilderness of Wollemi National Park, rain-forested canyons, spectacular sandstone cliffs and historic ruins of the former mining town, three hand crafted cabins (sleep 6,4 and 4) in the most beautiful setting, solar power, disabled facilities, ecologically built, pets welcome. A very special place !

Getting There:

You will need your own vehicle to get to Newnes, as there is no public transport, other than by taxi from Lithgow (50km away). (Lithgow can be reached by train from Sydney.)

From Sydney: Head west across the Blue Mountains, either via Katoomba, or via Windsor and Bell; pass Lithgow and take the road towards Mudgee. (The Mudgee road is now called the "Castlereagh Highway", but this does not show on any signs as yet). The turn-off to Newnes is at Lidsdale, 1km past the Wallerawang Power Station and 12km from the highway traffic lights at Lithgow. It is signposted.

From Bathurst: Follow the Great Western Highway to the Mudgee Road, then as above. It is also possible to follow side-roads through Wallerawang.

From Mudgee: Watch for the sign-posted turn-off (sharp left) at Lidsdale.

The drive from Lidsdale to Newnes is 35km and would normally take at least 45 minutes. North of Lidsdale, the road is bitumen to the foot of Wolgan Gap (12km), although narrow and deteriorating in many places. From there to Newnes (23km) it is mostly gravel with some earth and clay patches. The road is not really suitable for caravans, although small trailers should present no difficulty.
